Fund raising
Fund-raising is a vital task since it enables the Society to support restoration and maintenance. Whilst every opportunity is taken to obtain grants for projects, much of the money is raised through the efforts of our members and from donations. A common condition for government grants is that at least 50% of the cost of a project must be raised by the Society. The Information Centre at the Canal Head picnic site and the Society Stall both generate a steady income, as does the collection of aluminium drinks cans, etc.
Events help to generate interest in the canal and attract new members, as well as providing funds for our work.

The Information Centre is usually open from around lunchtime on Sundays and Bank Holidays during the better weather. In addition to providing information and leaflets we sell books and maps, sweets and canned drinks. Thanks to the generosity of members and supporters the Information Centre is always well stocked with a variety of goods.
The Society Stall is taken to local events and to waterways festivals further afield. We are always looking for help to with the Stall and our display about the Pocklington Canal. See the events page for more forthcoming outings.
Getting the balance right
Since its formation, PCAS has introduced many people to the canal, but apart from the busy picnic site at Canal Head, the canal remains peaceful and unspoilt. We feel that new buildings and leisure facilities alongside the canal could detract from its heritage value and we are working with Natural England to ensure that our activities do not damage the wildlife. All our tripboat crew are aware of the need to respect the environment.
We want local people and visitors to enjoy the Pocklington Canal but we certainly don't want it to become a tourist trap. It is a case of getting the balance right. Please join PCAS if you support what we are doing or contact PCAS if you have any concerns.
